Meschede has practiced successfully at Marshall for thirty-three years and has spent the greater part of his life in this section of the state. He was born on a farm fourteen miles northwest of Marshall, September 13, 1873, a son of Richard Meschede, who was a native of Paderborn, Prussia, born April 20, 1821. The father received a public school education and as a young man worked for a transportation company in Germany, filling the position of teamster. In his native land he married Fredericka Pittman, whose name was originally Puttmann and who was born in Arnsberg, Prussia, March 13, 1830. With his wife and three children Richard Meschede came to America in 1858 on a sailing vessel which was eleven weeks in making the voyage across the Atlantic. Landing at New Orleans, they proceeded to St. Louis, where the father obtained employment, and remained in the city until 1868. He then removed with his family to Saline county and purchased eighty acres of land, devoting the balance of his life to its development and improvement. He was a stalwart democrat but never aspired to political office. His death occurred March 15, 1902, and his wife passed away eleven years later, on March 15, 1913. Eight children were born to them, namely: Theresa, who became Mrs. Henry Hillebrandt; Annie, who was married to Frank D. Stockman; Lena, who was the wife of Edward A. Stockman; Fredericka; Richard; Joseph B.; Mary, who was Mrs. John E. Wagner; and William H., who is the sole surviving member of the family.

Reared on his father's farm, William H. Meschede obtained his elementary education in a parochial school and the public schools of Marshall and during 1892 attended the Christian Brothers School at St. Joseph. From 1892 to 1894 he was a student in the Central Missouri State Teachers College at Warrensburg and for three years thereafter taught in rural schools. In the fall of 1897 he enrolled in the law school of the University of Michigan, from which he received the degree of Bachelor of Laws in 1900, and immediately upon his admission to the Missouri bar opened a law office in Marshall. He has been retained as counsel in cases which have attracted more than local attention and year by year his practice has grown as he has demonstrated his legal learning and devotion to the interests of his clients.

Mr. Meschede is a communicant of the Catholic Church and his fraternal relations are with the Knights of Columbus and the Modern Woodmen of America. He is a loyal democrat and has campaigned for the party. On its ticket he was nominated for prosecuting attorney of Saline county in 1901 and was elected for two consecutive terms without opposition from either party, retiring from the office in 1913 with a creditable record. He has constantly in mind the dignity and responsibility of his profession and upholds its high standards."

Deceased was of the rare type of true womanhood and her life stands out as an inspiration to the younger generations. The tender affections entertained for her by her sons and daughters is the strongest evidence that can bear witness to her true maternal love and nature. From their infancy and through their childhood years she taught them the devine lessons of Christian truths, teaching them to honor and revere Him to Whom reverence alone is due. No selfish nature shrouded her Christian spirit and no sacrifice was too great for her to make, if thereby she could make happy those who were near and dear to her. He had an estate probated in Henry County, MO. Message text written by "Andy and Kelly Mears"

    Hi all,

Just got a copy of Henry Hillebrand's will from Henry County, MO. It was written in the 1912 and the gist of it is that his wife Theresa gets everything. Upon her death, each child (8 sons, 1 daughter) gets $1,000, except for Frederick who got $2,000. Then I guess there was a falling out of some sort, because he made a codicil in 1914 that gave daughter Jessie only $100. Apparently he was sick, because he made a second codicil confirming the first. Anyway, I thought it was interesting, and you might too.

    Best wishes,

    Kelly

"Henry Hillebrand is a native of Missouri, one of the state's sterling school men, and has been engaged in the work of teaching and administering public schools in different parts of the state for about thirty years.

He was born in one of the richest counties of Central Missouri, at the old town of Shackelford in Saline County, March 9, 1876. His father, Henry Hillebrand, was born at Harth, Germany, in 1844, lived there during his boyhood and early youth, and about 1869 came to the United States. He located at Lanesville in Saline County, and for a long period of years was numbered among the progressive farmers of that locality, and about 1906 moved to Clinton in Henry County, Missouri, where he continued farming until his death on December 13, 1924. He was a Democrat in his political affiliations, and lived the life of a devout Christian. He married Theresa Meschede, who was born in Germany in 1850, and was brought to the United States by her parents in 1859. She grew up among relatives in Saline County, and her father, Richard Meschede, afterwards settled in that county, having spent his first years in this country at Saint Louis. He was a farmer near Lanesville and lived out his life there. He married a Miss Pittman, a native of Germany, who died in Saline County when eighty-six years of age. The children of Henry Hillebrand and wife were: John, a farmer at Urich, Missouri; Richard J., who owns and operates the old Hillebrand homestead at Shackelford; Henry Hillebrand; Joe, a farmer at Marshall, Missouri; Ed, a farmer at Clinton; Fred, a resident of Urich and since 1911 a rural mail carrier; Vince E., a farmer at Creighton, Missouri; and Francis, a farmer, who died at Clinton in 1918 of the influenza, when twenty-five years of age.

Mr. Henry Hillebrand, a Missouri farm boy, had the advantages of the rural schools of Saline County, and in 1897 entered the Missouri State Teachers College at Warrensburg.

In the intervals of his teaching he continued his work there during summer sessions until 1925, when he was graduated with the Bachelor of Science degree in education. He taught his first term of rural school in 1898, and has had five years of rural school experience. During that time he taught in Calhoun, Henry and Saline counties. For three years he was principal of the high school at Calhoun, for one year was superintendent of schools at Urich, and four years superintendent at Deepwater. After he had been superintendent of schools at Humansville for three years he left school work in 1918, during the World war, and took up farming in Henry County. However, the call of educational work was too strong to resist and in 1921 he became superintendent of schools at Shawnee Mound. He was superintendent at Creighton from 1923 to 1926, and after another year on his farm at Creighton came to Farber in Audrain County, in the fall of 1927, and became superintendent in that progressive little town of Northeastern Missouri.

Mr. Hillebrand has always kept in touch with educational interests and is a member of the Missouri State and Kansas State Teachers Associations. He is a Democrat in politics, a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and is affiliated with the Masonic Lodge at Humansville and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows at Urich.

He married at Calhoun, Missouri, December 31, 1901, Miss Edna Hudson, daughter of Rev. Martin D. and Sarah E. (Crow) Hudson. Her mother resides at Deepwater, Missouri. Her father was a minister of the Presbyterian Church and in his earlier years did a great deal of work as a circuit rider in South Missouri counties. Mr. and Mrs. Hillebrand have four children: Martin, a graduate of the Deepwater High School, has been looking after the home farm at Creighton; Henry B., who graduated from the high school at Deepwater in 1926, is also a farmer; Herbert and Home, the two younger sons, are still in school."

He was married to Edna Alice HUDSON (daughter of Rev. Martin David HUDSON and Sarah Ellen CROW) on December 31, 1901 in Calhoun, Henry County, MO.22,3,7,18,20 married by Dr. J. Russell Crawford of the Presbyterian Church in Clinton, MO. Karrol Hillebrand has a photo of Bill and Daisy Moreland, noted as "Attendant to Henry & Edna Married Dec 31st 1901". Photo taken by Marks Studio in Clinton, MO. Sources suggest that they were married, variously, in the Presbyterian Church in Clinton, in Calhoun and in Farber, MO.

    "Sunday nite 10 o'clock

    Dear Mother,

I wished very much that you could have stayed today but I did not know this morning that God would call me so suddenly and surely into the church.

Oh know, its not a sudden interest, its been there a long time, and when they gave the invitation call this morning there was something that made a definite call. I felt so alone, so unfit, ungrateful and the tears I could not keep back. But I didn't go to the alter, and as I went out of the church Brother O'Neal took my hand and said "Why didn't you come? You wanted to."

I have been so miserable all day. Have cried the greater part of the day until this afternoon I had to talk to somebody so we went to Farber. Mr. and Mrs. Hillebrand talked with me trying hard to get me to understand my condition of the feeling of unworthyness which we all feel.

So tonite Henry and I both joined and were baptized. Its the most serious step I have ever taken.

I hope you'll understand our decision and pray each day that God will give me help, strength and increase my faith. I hope you won't feel too disappointed in my church choice but I'm sure you would want me to be content and satisfied in my worship.

Please pray that I may grow in knowledge and faith.

    Love,

    Idele"
