SALINE COUNTY, MISSOURI

One of Saline County’s aged pioneer residents, Mrs. Elizabeth Crosslin died Sunday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. H. C. Duncan east of Gilliam, aged 92 years, 8 months, 11 days. The funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Fish Creek church conducted by the Rev. R. W. Settle, pastor of the Slater Baptist church. The burial was at the Fish Creek Cemetery.

Since the death of her husband on September 5, 1895 Mrs. Crosslin had lived with her children at their different homes. During the last year or more she had been tenderly cared for at the home of the daughter where she died.

Elizabeth Liggett Crosslin was a daughter of Joseph and Mary Liggett. She was born July 10, 1833 in Saline County. She was the oldest of six children and the last of the family to pass away. She was married to Meredith M. Crosslin on August 1, 1852. To them were born nine children, seven of whom are living. They are: Mrs. A. C. Bradshaw, Guyman, OK; James C. Crosslin, Sedalia, MO; Mrs. H. C. Duncan, Gilliam, MO; Mrs. J. E. Goodman, Marshall, MO; J. F. Crosslin and Mitchell M. Crosslin, Slater, MO; Mrs. Eugene Cott, Platte City, MO. Twenty-eight grandchildren, thirty-three great grand children, two great great grandchildren.

Mrs. Crosslin was converted at the age of fifteen years and united with the Concord Christian church. When the Fish Creek Baptist church was organized she became one of its charter members and held her membership here until her death. In spite of the bad roads a large concourse of friends gathered for the funeral and to pay their last tributes to one they had long loved and esteemed.

Among those of the family who were here for the funeral from a distance were: Mrs. A. C. Bradshaw, Guyman, OK; Mr. & Mrs. Fred Orahood of Kansas City, and Mitchell Crosslin who has been at Platte City during the winter.

James C. Crosslin, a former resident of Slater, and a brother of Mrs. H. C. Duncan of Slater, died at his home in Sedalia Tuesday night, May 8^th. He would have been 76 years old June 8^th. Mr. Crosslin had been ill two weeks with pneumonia.

Mr. Crosslin is survived by his widow, formerly Lou Mangus, to whom he married in 1886 and the following children; C. C. Crosslin and Leonard Crosslin, both of Shreveport, La.; Cecil Crosslin, St. Charles, Ray Crosslin of the home; Mrs. T. E. Shoemaker and Mrs. A. E. Duff, both of Sedalia; and Mrs. Lloyd Anderson, Sweet Springs. Two children died in infancy. Also surviving are four sisters, Mrs. Rosa Cott, Platte City; Mrs. A. C. Bradshaw, Guyman, Okla., Mrs. James Goodman, Marshall; Mrs. H. Clay Duncan, Slater; and one brother, M. M. Crosslin of Platte City, and six grandchildren.

Mr. Crosslin joined the Baptist church at Gilliam at an early age. He was a member of the East Sedalia Baptist Church at the time of his death.

Funeral services were held from the Gillespie Funeral Home in Sedalia Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock conducted by Rev. Greenway of Sedalia. Interment was in Crown Hill Cemetery in Sedalia.

Mrs. H. C. Duncan, accompanied by Mrs. James Goodman of Marshall, attended the funeral services.

M. F. Crosslin, 70, died Monday afternoon at his home, 730 North Allen. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of the Sweeny-Reser Funeral Home and burial will be in Ridge Park Cometary. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.

Marvin Frank Crosslin was born in Sedalia, Missouri, August 18, 1902, the son of Joseph and Nevada Shepard Crosslin. He married March 19, 1933 at Olathe, Kansas to Lucille Thornton, who survives of the home. Mr. Crosslin was baptized in the Baptist Church early in life, was a veteran of World War I, and retired in 1967 from the International Shoe Company here.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lucille Thornton Crosslin, of the home; two brothers, Hayden Crosslin, Hot Springs, Arkansas, Henry Crosslin, Branson, Missouri and a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Taylor, Tanawanda, New York.
 

Funeral services for M.F. Crosslin, 70, who died Monday at his home, 730 North Allen were at 2:00 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of the Sweeney-Reser Funeral Home. Rev. David Maher, assistant pastor of the St. Peter’s Catholic Church, officiated and burial was in Ridge Park Cometary.

Mrs. Travis Bullington, organist, accompanied Mrs. John Staley.

Died at his home near Fish Creek church this county Thursday September 5, 1895, Meredith Crosslin aged 71 years and seven days.

Mr. Crosslin was one of the old residents of Saline having been born and raised in this county. He had been in feeble health for two years and died of contusion of the brain. He was a good man loved and respected by all who knew him. His funeral was attended by a large congregation and services held at Fish Creek church, conducted by his pastor Rev. J. D. Thomason.

Mildred Ann Page Crosslin was born in Albermarle County, Virginia, January 2, 1832. Came by wagon to Saline County, Missouri with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Page, when she was about six years of age. She was married to William Crosslin in Saline County on October 11, 1852. To this union five children were born: B. E. of Caldwell, Kansas, E. B. of Deer Creek, Oklahoma, Mrs. Willie A. Ohlendorff, late of Numa, Oklahoma, Mrs. Olive W. Edwards of Slater, Missouri and William M. who died in infancy; also 20 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Her husband preceded her February 3, 1881. She came to Kansas with her sons in 1884 where she lived till the opening of the strip, at which time she made the race from the state line south of Caldwell securing the farm upon which she continually resided until her death which occurred on the 15^th of December, 1918 at 1:30 p.m. making her 86 years, 11 months and 15 days. All her children were with her during her last illness, ministering as best they could to her every want. She died as she had lived in the blessed assurance of a Heavenly Father who had promised, "I will lead thee, I will guide thee." She had been a member of the Baptist church from early life. The funeral conducted at the grave by Rev. Vernon Johnson and as a basis of his remarks he selected the words, "Be thou faithful unto the end and thou shalt wear a crown of life".

Mrs. Nevada Frances Crosslin died Saturday, April 12, 1941 at 4:50 p.m., following an illness of several months. Mrs. Crosslin who was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Shepard, was born June 26, 1878 on the old home place about 2 ½ miles southeast of Gilliam and died at the age of 62 years, 10 months and 14 days. On October 18, 1896 she was married to Joseph F. Crosslin, who preceded her in death, August 12, 1928. To this union were born five children, two daughters and three sons, all of whom survive and they are: Mrs. Howard Beasley of Chicago, Illinois, Mrs. Marvin Taylor, of Tonawanda, New York, Marvin Crosslin of Marshall, Harden and Henry Crosslin of Hinsdale, Illinois. She also leaves two brothers and two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Bailey of Slater, Mrs. Florence Huff, Thomas Shepard and Frank Shepard, of near Slater.

The family moved to Slater from the country in 1915. She was a member of Christian Church from which the funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. E. B. Hensley and burial was made in the City Cemetery.

Mrs. Lydia Crosslin Goodman, 84 years old, of 78 West Porter, died about 3 o'clock Tuesday morning, March 6, at Fitzgibbon Hospital, where she had been admitted as a patient about 6 o'clock Monday evening.  She had not been well
for the past two weeks.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon, March 8, at the Sweeney Funeral Home.  The body will remain at the funeral home until the hour of the services.

Mrs. Goodman was the widow of James E. Goodman, who died Aug. 6, 1950.  She was born in the Fish Creek neighborhood, Dec. 22, 1866, the daughter of Meredith and Elizabeth Liggett Crosslin.  She was married to James E.
Goodman  at Slater in 1888 and they lived on a farm in the Fish Creek community until moving to Marshall about 30 years ago.

She is survived by a daughter, Gladys, who is Mrs. Sam T. Hoener, Oak Park, Ill.; two grandchildren, Laverne and Nyla Hoener; a sister, Mrs. Rosa L. Cott who since Mr. Goodman's death had been making her home with Mrs. Goodman; a borther, Mitchell Crosslin of Slater, and many nieces and nephews.

At an early age, she joined the Fish Creek Baptist Church, moving her membership to the church here when she moved to Marshall.
