Biography of James Newton Jamison (1814-1907)

James N. Jamison remained in Rockbridge County, Virginia until he was 25 years old (1839) and then rode horseback to McComb, Illinois where he remained until he came to Saline County, Missouri about 1843 and located 320 acres of land, which he improved, and on which he spent the remainder of his life. Soon after arriving in Saline County, he married Lucy Townsend, daughter of Sanders A. Townsend of Virginia, a union terminated by the death of Lucy one year later. Subsequently, in 1849 he went to California, presumably because of the "gold rush" of 1848 and to seek a fortune. This trip apparently was unsuccessful and a short time later he returned to Missouri (1850) , and about the year 1851, married Edmonia H uston, who bore him five children. James N. Jamison was a member of the Methodist-Episcopal Church South and active in all types of religious and benevolent work. He was a true type of the upright Christian gentleman and an enterprising citizen and his death on May 23, 1907, was a matter of profound regret to all who knew him. After his death , his widow, Edmonia, lived with her daughter in Marshall, Missouri where her many qualities of mind and heart have endeared her to the large circle of friends with whom she is accustomed to mingle.

James N. Jamison and his wife Edmonia are buried in Arrow Rock Cemetery, Saline County. Missouri.

The Jamison homestead was about 7.5 miles Northwest of Arrow Rock. He is buried in Arrow Rock, Cemetery.
