Biography of Samuel Webb

From "History of Saline Co Mo" and personal research.

Samuel WEBB was born 3 March 1815 in Northumberland Co VA.  He was the second oldest of four children of Edward WEBB and Nancy DOWNTAIN.  Nancy died circa 1822, perhaps in childbirth, but if not shortly thereafter.  Edward followed in 1826.  Edward's presumed brother Vincent was made guardian of the four children William H b c 1812, Samuel and Edward F and Nancy D, presumed twins
b c 1822.  Nancy D stayed in Virginia and married a Joseph HUMPHRIES. Vincent had the three boys educated and all could read and write well.  I have not been able to find out where William went.

Samuel makes his way to Saline Co by 1843, probably as early as 1836 and perhaps earlier.  He bought and ran a stage line, running from Lexington to Boonville MO.  He did well, sold and bought a farm near Union Church.  Later he bought land in Grand Pass Township, improving and selling (later known as
the Dave Moreland Farm) to buy the homested near Grand Pass.  On Nov 14, 1843,  Samuel married Elizabeth McREYNOLDS the daughter of the early Saline Co settler Joseph McREYNOLDS and his wife Elizabeth LOGAN.  Samuel was a slaveholder, and according to family lore the names were Archer, Jane, Henry, Thomas and Tom L.  Samuel was successful as a farmer both before and after the war.  He and Elizabeth had at least 12 children.
